What is Sports Medicine ?

Sports medicine is a field of medicine that is concerned with the treatment of injuries that can occur to an athlete while performing amateur or professional sports.

The sports medicine usually consists of a team of highly trained physicians, physiotherapists, surgeons, personal health trainers, coaches and other personnel.

Many people have a wrong perception that sports medicine is only a form of treatment that is needed when an athlete gets injured. To some extent, it is true but it is only one aspect of the sports medicine.

Sports medicine also involves thorough analysis of the injury such as its cause and its effects on the performance of the athlete. It also helps the athlete understand various ways to prevent injuries and remain fit while playing any sports.

When an athlete is injured, the expert who administers sports medicine will rush to him to provide immediate medical assistance in the form of first aid. It is done to avoid deterioration of the injury.

A research that was conducted at the Sports Medicine Clinic, Craigavon Area Hospital in Northern Ireland and study concluded that sports and exercise medicine is an evolving specialty in the United Kingdom. It was the first systematic attempt to define the role and responsibilities of the sports medicine specialist and the findings are of relevance to the future development of a career pathway.

Another research on was done at the Middle East Technical University Medical Center in Turkey. It was concluded that muscle strength imbalances contribute to knee injuries. Specific eccentric exercises for quadriceps and hamstring muscle should be supported into the soccer player’s training program. Therefore; knee injuries can be prevented.

What are the most common sports related injuries? Different sports can result in different types of injury.  Contact sports can result in bruises while games like cricket can lead to a hamstring pull.

By taking into account all major sports, a survey revealed that sports injuries related to the knee, shoulder and elbow are the most common sports injuries. Games like football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, and gymnastics are some of the sports that involve great number of injuries.

What actions result in sporting injuries? There can be plenty of reasons as to why you may encounter sport injuries: making use of ill-fitting sports equipments, not wearing safety gears, playing any sports in a rash manner to win the game, lack of awareness about sports medicine techniques for preventing injuries and being physically unfit to play.

Is surgery a must in treating sports injuries? Non-operative sports medicine is all about dealing sports injuries without resorting to surgery. After thoroughly evaluating the injury, medication is provided for fast recovery.

If the patient is not responding to the medicine, and if needed, the doctor may suggest the patient to undergo surgery. In majority of the cases, the sports medicine aims at treating injuries without surgery.

The patient should rely on the doctor for medication and guidance. If the doctor advises the injured athlete to take a break from the sport until the injury heals, the athlete should listen to the doctor’s advice.

If the athlete resumes playing in spite of the injury, he or she further aggravate the injury or initiate a set of new injuries. So again, listening and heeding the sports physician advice is emphasized.
