What is Sport Injury Rehabilitation ?

Sport injury rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary approach designed to help you, the athlete,  return your body to its normal, pre-injury function and get you back to playing the game you love, as soon as possible.

In sports, injury is almost inevitable. It can be a result of overuse of a group of muscles and bones, bad training and form, or just plain old bad luck.

Even if you are engaged in non-contact sports, you are still at risk of a sport related injury, although not quite as high as risks associated with contact sports.

Effective physiotherapy and rehabilitation is vital to getting you back in the game and preventing the recurrence of the same injury, not to mention lowering the possibility of a new injury.

The success of your therapy, however, depends on the adherance of you, the athlete,  to any structured physiotherapy program.

Prescription exercises are performed in order to strengthen your muscles, improve flexibility and mobility.  You can also expect to learn how to implement proper breathing patterns, avoid poor training techniques, fitness counseling, as well as prevention of future incidents of an old injury.

In the Epidemiology of Athletic Injuries released by the College of Human Medicine of Michigan State University stated that: “Accurate and reliable injury rate data would better indicate the types of injuries or situations where injuries occur that could be positively affected by appropriate rule changes, equipment, changes, or suggested changes in coaching technique.”

In another study, the compliance of the injured athletes in the rehabilitation process was investigated and it was revealed that practical guidelines and specific strategies, increase effective communication and active listening, encourage social support and positive outlook as well as pain management can improve the compliance to a sports injury rehabilitation program.

Sport Injury Rehabilitation ?

In a recent survey by The Football Associated in the United Kingdom, it was discovered that more than half of injuries were sustained without contact of a fellow player, but rather during activities such as landing, sprinting, and slowing down. It is important that proper form is practiced so that injury from these everyday activities does not happen. PT Health sport injury rehabilitation however, can help athletes, coaches, and trainers address the different aspects of injury when it does occur, and provide the most targeted and appropriate treatment, and prevention strategies.

Comprehensive sport injury rehabilitation involves alternative training wherein the methods used are modified so as not to stress the injury, but still progress within the rehabilitation process. A gradual return to full training can then be advised by the therapist when appropriate. This is a crucial point and there must be an open communication between athlete and coach to avoid training too hard, too soon. Once the athlete fully recovers, steps are taken to prevent repetition of your injury.

Once you intiate a sports injury rehabilitation program, your compliance to the treatment is very important in your recovery. Follow the advice of your doctor and therapist. The key to full a recovery is gradual and progressive exercises. Do not do exercises too hard, too soon.
