In support of the research and local programs of the Hamilton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society, some members of the PT Health team participated in the cancer relay event held June 11, 2010.

Initial estimate of the team’s spirit and passion to help were underestimated when five groups instead of the expected two participated. Moreover, the teams raised a total of $14,735.68 which was almost three times the amount they had hoped to raise. Started with 46 eager participants and ended with 18 persevering individuals for the closing ceremonies, the relay was indeed a success for the PT Health team.

The Relay for Life is an annual event conducted by the Canadian Cancer Society in celebration of the renewed life of those who have survived cancer, in remembrance to the loved ones lost in the battle against cancer, and in empowering people and communities in fighting back cancer. As such, there are three main events carried out in the 12-hour event: the Survivor’s Victory Lap, Luminary Ceremony, and the Fight Back Against Cancer.

Cheering on cancer survivors and their caregivers as they walk the Survivors’ Victory Lap – this is the first lap in the relay. It embodies the truth that cancer survivorship is real and there are many who live to prove it. The next event happens at twilight to remember and give tribute to those who have fought but lost in their battle against cancer. Supporters can purchase a luminary which is then placed along with many others down the length of the track. The closing ceremony aims to encourage everyone to become more proactive in the fight against cancer.

The funds raised from the Relay for Life is employed in different ways in the struggle against cancer including financial support for research and grants, prevention and advocacy initiatives, as well to provide support programs to patients, their families and caregivers.

The PT Health team and the other participants in this year’s event came up with $295,000 but are encouraged to spread the word so that next year will even be a bigger Relay for Life event and even more money can be raised for the cause.

PT Health would like to thank everyone  for their support, passion to help and determination.
