Orthotics

What Are Orthotics?

redgap

Orthotics are health care products custom designed to provide support and correct abnormalities that occur in the body due to poor foot biomechanics.

Biomechanics focus on the study of the body’s movement during various activities like walking, running and playing sports.

Your feet impact the proper functioning of your entire body including your knees, hips and joints. Proper foot biomechanics help your body move as efficiently and functionally as possible.

At pt Health clinics, we work with you to measure and fit custom-made orthotics for the effective treatment of musculoskeletal variances.

Your new orthotics will help to better support targeted joints that may have become unstable and will facilitate normal joint movement.

As an example, an extensive body of scientific research states that orthotics are one of the most effective ways to treat various kinds of foot problems such as plantar fasciitis.

Benefits of Orthotics

redgap

Orthotics are used as a preventive measure to help restore the natural state of your feet.

If you spend a lot of time standing or walking, you may experience pain in the ankles, heels, and/or soles of your feet. Orthotics can help to reduce this pain, as well as pain in other areas related to the improper alignment of your feet.

If you play sports, even the slightest imbalance in the foot may make you more prone to other types of physical stresses and injuries.

People who are overweight also put a lot of extra stress on various joints and could benefit significantly from orthotics.

Without proper intervention for misaligned feet, you may end up with incorrect posture. Pain can worsen in your knees, back and even neck!

Orthotics and gait scans can:

  • Secure proper positioning of foot bones, joints, ankles, and knees
  • Help correct foot dysfunction
  • Improve athletic performance, endurance and strength
  • Help relieve pain and foot fatigue
  • Benefit older adults who live with arthritis

Research

The research Effect of an orthotic intervention on sensorimotor integration mechanisms in patients with musculoskeletal disorders was conducted by Bodynamics Laboratory, New York Chiropractic College Research, NY. It was concluded that altering sensory feedback signals from the plantar surface of the foot with an orthotic intervention modifies sensorimotor integration mechanisms in a subject-specific manner.

In a study on the Effects of exercise and custom-made orthotics on blood pressure and heart rate variability: a randomized controlled pilot study, it was noted that the results showed positive changes in cardiac and vascular autonomic regulations with exercise training when combined with foot orthotics.
