Virtual Physiotherapy Spotlight: Grace McAlear-Marjerrison

Kirsten RoesinkPhysiotherapy, Spotlight, Virtual Care

Are you looking to continue your rehabilitative treatment while practicing physical distancing and self-isolating?

Good news! pt Health now offers virtual physiotherapy, giving you the opportunity to receive treatment from the comfort of your own home through video conference technology.

Wondering how virtual physiotherapy works? In this Spotlight, we’ll share some first hand information from one of our physiotherapists with you.

Grace McAlear-Marjerrison, Physiotherapist at Thorold Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation – pt Health has been offering virtual physiotherapy here for the past few weeks.

Today, we’re talking to Grace about her experience with this service so far.

Q: Tell us about the type of treatments you can provide through virtual physiotherapy.

A: We are able to provide the vast majority of your Physiotherapy treatments through virtual care. Although we are unable to use our hands directly, we can show you or someone at home techniques for soft tissue and joint self-mobilization.

We can also review, add, modify, or progress home exercises to ensure you are meeting your rehabilitation goals and to maximize your recovery: we have lots of clever ideas for household items and exercises that can be used when you can’t go to the gym or the store.
Most importantly, we are here to answer your questions and to provide you with the patient education you need to continue your progress on the road to recovery.

Q: What has the patient experience been like with virtual care?

A: I’m very used to working hands on with patients and virtual treatments were a new experience for me so I had some hesitation, particularly because I am not very tech savvy.

But, I knew that even during this time of physical distancing, people still needed some guidance with their Physiotherapy care. Now that I have been consistently providing virtual care, and have seen how easy it is, I am very pleased and excited to say we have had great success providing our patients the support and treatment they need!

I think our patients have really appreciated that we are able to provide an experience that allows them to be safe at home while also meeting their rehabilitation needs. After having given it a try, patients have been happy to book again.

Q: Can you share your favourite story of how you helped a patient with virtual care?

A: It is hard to pick one favourite: overall, I have been so relieved and so pleased to be able to continue providing Physiotherapy treatment to my patients who need it!

Every single appointment has been rewarding for me, and has provided patients with the care, information and tools they need to continue their recovery.

Whether it was a nagging old problem, or a serious new life-altering issue, it has been awesome to be able to meet our community’s needs at this unprecedented time in our lives!
