Benefits of the Older Adult Therapy Program

Growing old is a natural part of life. However, as we all know, with the passing of time our body does not always function at the optimal level as it used to.  An injury or illness can offset our ability to do a lot of tasks that we do in our daily lives.

The other reality is that some chronic conditions have an onset that occurs later in life. Arthritis, dementia, coordination problems, partial loss of eyesight, heart diseases, and Alzheimer’s disease are among these.

However, it is possible to lead our lives with independence, dignity and fun if we take concrete steps to make sure that we are physically and mentally fit as we age.

Here are some of the benefits the Older adult therapy program offers:

  •  Helps relieve pain from osteoarthritis, a common problem in older adults.
  •  Useful in controlling and limiting Parkinson’s Disease.
  •  Helps maintain balance, reduce falls, mobility and stability.
  •  Recommendeded to aid cardiac and pulmonary diseases.

Through its clinics and LTC services, pt Health has been providing Older Adult Therapy for senior citizens in Canada for more than a decade.
Conditions that tend to have a later onset like arthritis, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, amputations, cardiac and pulmonary disease, incontinence issues, dementia, joint replacements, mobility related problems, hip fractures, back problems, etc. are common conditions that are treated through older adult therapy.
You can expect improved overall health, reduced joint pain, increased mobility, enhanced sleeping patterns, improved circulation, reduction of stress, delayed progression of chronic diseases and prevention of disabilities.
In older adult therapy, treatments are provided two or three times a week. The length and frequency of sessions will depend on the advice of the physician and the assessment of the physiotherapist.

Some of the common methods to measure body composition and body weight is Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist to Hip Ratio,  Hydrostatic Weighing,  Skinfold measurement,  Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Total Body Protein(TBP) etc.

On a follow-up study by the Project ABLE (Advancing Better Living for Elders), which is a home-based initiative focused on helping urban community-based older adults, results have shown that therapy intervention can lead to extension of the length as well as betterment of the quality of life by up to 3.5 years.

In a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, it was demonstrated that community-based physical activity interventions are not only cost-effective but can also significantly reduce the onset of many chronic diseases as well as improve the quality of life among older adults.
