Are you looking to continue your rehabilitative treatment while practicing physical distancing and self-isolating?

Good news! pt Health now offers virtual physiotherapy, giving you the opportunity to receive treatment from the comfort of your own home through video conference technology.

Wondering how virtual physiotherapy works? In this Spotlight, we’ll share some first hand information from one of our physiotherapists with you.

Deirion Sookram, Physiotherapist at Petrolia Rehabilitation – pt Health has been offering virtual physiotherapy for the past few weeks.

Today, we’re talking to Deirion about his experience with this new service so far.

Q: Tell us about the type of treatments you can provide through virtual physiotherapy.

A: Education is a huge component of every treatment plan. Patients want to know what their injury is, what they can do to alleviate their pain, why it happened, what their prognosis is, and how they can prevent it from happening in the future.

Educating patients on these topics is something that be done very well through virtual care.

Virtual care also gives me the ability to prescribe and monitor exercise. Exercises are essential for any treatment type. I always tell patients, we can do 101 things for you on the table, but at the end of the treatment you get up and leave the table and go on to live your life. Exercises are the best simulator to give to patients for the movements they need to perform in everyday life.

Q: What has the patient experience been like with virtual care?

A: The patient experience has been really good so far. I feel like there’s an automatic sense of camaraderie. We’re in this together. We’re all trying to navigate the COVID-19 experience. Usually we start by chatting a bit about that and how we’re doing in this situation.

Patients are usually pleasantly surprised with the experience. They receive a lot out of the virtual sessions.

Q: Can you share your favourite story of how you helped a patient with virtual care?

A: One of my patients is a young individual suffering from a workplace injury without any direction on how to recover from it. He was frustrated and it was affecting his daily life, even after being temporarily laid off due to COVID-19.

He’s not very tech savvy, but we worked it out together between telephone and video. I was able to give him direction and we’re working together on his recovery.
